Ann HamiltonMon, Jul 9, 2001; by Ann Hamilton.Hello, readers! I wanted to participate in this workshop to increase my knowledge of computer capabilities, not only for myself, but for students, as well. I have seen the satisfaction previously in students "buy-in" when they are allowed to use the word processor, spread-sheets, and graphics to complete an assignment as opposed to completing the task by hand. Especially, children who have difficulty with handwriting, organization, and presentation skills. I want to learn more than word processing and spread sheets. I know there are many skills, shortcuts, etc. that could enhance my instruction in the area I teach, which is science. Specifically, I wish to learn how to create and update a web site, put together a presentation for lessons/ projects and also how to use and integrate a digital camera in the classroom. I will use knowledge of this workshop to enhance and create new learning opportunities for students, as well as share with fellow staff members in my district. I would like to schedule a regular time for students to come to the computer lab each month to practice skills relating to projects and labs learned in the classroom.
Technology is alive and well and progressing at a very rapid rate in our year 2001. I want all students to learn, get excited about, and stay current with all the technology available to them. In order to be an effective educator, I must provide, with the help of my district, time and resources to students so that they can progress, not only with subject-matter knowledge, but a way to present the knowledge using technology. I feel that if students are actively engaged in a project, assignment, or study group, the information is mastered, as opposed to simply being exposed to, and ultimately forgetting as soon as the assessment is complete. I will use technology to allow students to master what they learn.
