DREAM CAR (Multi Computer Applications)
This unit was designed by Sue Lednicky & Bianca Elliott, Lansing High School
OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to: Affective domains: Appreciate the capabilities of the different software programs available Cognitive domains: Know what programs to use for desired product Integrate the necessary skills into the creation of a multimedia presentation Apply the knowledge they have acquired to new projects in the future ASSESSMENT: Students will be assessed using a checklist with point valuations attached. FINAL PRODUCT: The final product is your final (worth 1/5th of your semester grade). The project checkpoints will be due during the semester and are worth one test grade each for a total of 400 points. A student critique list will be provided and will be completed by a peer and is worth 45 points. The finished project will include: Students will provide evidence that s/he used three specific Internet sites. Students will contact (call or visit) a local financial institution. Students will document this. Students will have advertisements of selected topic. Students will create one (1) Excel worksheet that provides the following: price, interest rate, number of years, yearly interest total, and monthly payment. Students will produce three (3) Access database tables. Two of the tables will have five (5) specific fields; the third table students will create their own fields. Students will create a PowerPoint presentation of 10-15 slides; no more, no less. This presentation will include the spreadsheet, the database tables, and visuals that enhance the topic. Students will create one persuasive newsletter of one to two pages in length using Publisher. This newsletter will include the spreadsheet, database tables, and visuals that enhance the topic. EXPECTATIONS: Failure to turn in all components will result in a 1/5th drop of the letter grade for the project. No late work will be accepted. Quality will be tolerated. This is a reflection of you. ACTIVITIES: Students will create a Publisher newsletter (one draft copy of the persuasive writing). Students will create an Excel spreadsheet containing text and data using mathematical formulas. (Additional spreadsheets and graphs are optional.) Students will create their Access database tables. Students will create a PowerPoint presentation integrating Excel and Access, importing images and animations, word art, and any other items that may enhance the project. Students will finish the Publisher newsletter integrating Excel and Access. Students will review and make changes to their PowerPoint presentation and finalize their Publisher newsletter. For their final grade students will turn in the PowerPoint presentation, the Publisher newsletter, the Internet research, the newspaper ads, and the documentation of contact with a financial institution. PROJECT REQUIREMENTS: Internet: Students will be using the following websites: The first website will be the one of their chosen dream car (ex. www.chrysler.com or www.ford.com or www.chevrolet.com). The second one is www.fueleconomy.gov. The third one is www.kellybluebook.com. When doing their comparison, students will select specific options their car will have. These options are: cruise, power windows, power locks, power steering, tilt steering wheel, air conditioning, rear window defrost, antilock breaks, cloth interior, and radio with CD and cassette. Students will collect information on fuel consumption (MPG), tire size, and engine size. (Students can collect and use any additional information that they feel will enhance their project.) Students will print their information. They will be using this information to create their newsletter and presentation. Students will also hand this information in as part of their project.
Publisher: Step 1: Their persuasive writing is to include: a project title as the heading (be sure to use word) text in Times New Roman, 10 point description of the cars graphics (a picture of each car)sized to fit correctly text must be in full justification This will be the rough draft which is the first part of the project to be turned in. Step 2: They must import their Excel worksheet. (This does not have to be the entire worksheet, it can be just the two tables they made.) Step 3: They must import their Access database tables. Their last database table will be their Works Cited which will be put at the end of the newsletter. Step 4: The entire newsletter must be one page in length and preferably two to three pages considering all the information you are importing and the graphics you are including. STUDENTS MUST USE SPELL CHECK AND PROOFREAD THEIR WORK. STUDENTS MUST HAVE SOMEONE ELSE ALSO PROOFREAD THEIR PAPER.
Excel: Project Title: THE PROJECT TITLE NEEDS TO BE IN TIMES NEW ROMAN 20 POINT, ALL CAPS, BOLD, ITALICIZED,ENTERED IN CELL A1 AND CENTERED ACROSS SELECTION OF COLUMNS. This last section was part of what their work should look like. Dream car: THE DREAM CAR DESCRIPTION WILL BE IN TIMES NEW ROMAN 16 POINT, ALL CAPS, BOLD, ENTERED IN CELL A5, CENTERED ACROSS SELECTION OF COLUMNS AND WILL INCLUDE YEAR, MAKE, MODEL, 2DR OR 4DR. Instructions for the project: This section will be in Times New Roman 12 point. The column headings are: Principal, Interest Rate, Number of Years, Yearly Interest, and Monthly Payments Be sure to use word wrap on the longer column headings as well as have them centered in the column. Start entering the headings in cell B7. Row headings are: 24 months, 36 months, 48 months Be sure to left align the row headings. Start entering the headings in cell A8. Data: Start entering the data in cell B8. Use the format menu and format this data in currency with two decimal places and no dollar ($) symbol. Determine the equation to find your yearly interest and enter that equation into the correct cells. Then determine the equation to find your monthly payment and enter that equation into the correct cells. Use your own judgement in aligning the numerical data. Some of the data would look better right aligned and some would look better being centered in the column. Entire table: Place a double lined border around the entire table excluding the "Project Title". Repeat the above directions starting in row 15, omit the project title, and do the calculations for a Geo Metro, 4dr with the same year as your dream car. Set this table up so that the format looks the same. Center the entire worksheet horizontally and vertically. You can enhance the worksheet with visuals. DO NOT CHANGE ANY OF THE ABOVE DIRECTIONS. Access: Table 1: Students will save this as "DREAM CAR". Students will include five fields. The field labels will be Dealership, Street Address, City, State, and Phone #. Students will enter at least five records that will show where their dream car can be purchased. All text must be shown and the table must fit onto one page. Table 2: Students will save as "Geo Metro". It will include the same five fields as used for "Dream Car". You will enter at least five records that will show where this car can be purchased. All text must be shown and the table must fit onto one page. Table 3: Students will save as "Works Cited". Students will determine the field labels and how many they will need. Students need to remember that not all fields must have data in them unless they make them a required field. Students will enter the required data. All text must be shown and the table must fit onto one page.
PowerPoint: Each student's presentation should use an equal amount of text and visuals. The presentation will be a minimum of 10 slides and a maximum of 15. Their presentation must include a title page (slide 1) and an ending slide (slide 10 or 15). The ending slide must be SHORT and CATCHY (ex. Mustangs -- the way of the FUTURE) and use Word Art and at least one graphic. Students must be sure to include their Excel spreadsheet tables (one table per slide) and their Access tables (one per slide). Students need to look at the other parts of their project and include similar information, such as fuel consumption and engine size, into their presentation. Students SHOULD NOT limit themselves to including one or two pieces of information only. They should use any other PowerPoint tools that will enhance their presentation. A quiz is available at "Dream Car". This is a pass/fail quiz. Students can only fail it, if they do not answer the questions.
