Native American Literature

In this unit you will read the following stories and poems from your literature book: The World on the Turtle's Back (Iroquois) p. 24, Coyote and the Buffalo (Okanogan) p. 40, Fox and Coyote and Whale (Okanogan) p. 43, Song of the Sky Loom (Tewa) p. 33, and Hunting Song (Navajo) p. 33.

When you read The World on the Turtle's Back you should use the Guide to Creation Myths worksheet provided below and you will also need to know Joseph Campbell's Four Functions of a Myth (found in the Literary Concepts box on p. 31).
  • Guide to Creation Myths: This worksheet will help you determine which stories are creation myths and which are not...use this worksheet as a guide when designing your own Creation Myth.

  • Creation Myth Project: Click here to see the requirements for this project. It is due before you take the Native American Literature Test.

  • Test Review Sheet: This study guide should help you know what will be on the test. Good Luck!
