MLA Format, Tips, and Examples

John Doe

Ms. Robinson

English III

16 August 2000

MLA Paper: An Example

This is the way all MLA style papers should look. They must be typed, double-spaced, with no extra spaces between paragraphs. There should be a header in the right-hand corner that includes your last name and page number. The program you type your paper in will have an insert header function. Under your header, in the left-hand corner of the paper will be your name, followed by your teacher or professor's name, then the class name, and the date. Your title should be centered, and then you start your introductory paragraph right below the title. Remember that your thesis statement is usually the last sentence of introduction (which can be longer than one paragraph.) Good Luck.

A few things you should consider as you write your paper are listed below.

1. Do not use contractions in formal essays.

2. Always use 3rd person narrative; no 1st person opinions are necessary.

3. Always document your sources. (Robinson 22)

4. The paper must have a title.

5. Never end a sentence with a preposition.

6. Read the paper aloud to catch mistakes.

7. Try to eliminate as much passive voice as possible.
