Slavery and the Civil War

  • To start this unit first check out the Time Line: Conflict and Expansion on p. 556 then read the Part 1 Introduction: A House Divided on p. 558.

    The following stories, poems, and plays from your literature book will help you understand the literature and attitude of the people of this country during the times of slavery and Civil War:


    Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, (Frederick Douglass) p. 562,
    Stanzas on Freedom (James Russell Lowell) p. 575,
    Free Labor (Frances Ellen Watkins Harper) p. 576, and
    An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (Ambrose Bierce) p. 580.



    Complete these assignments to better understand slavery, the Civil War, and different literary writing techniques.
