Local Color

Characteristics of Local Color:

  • 1. Settings are frequently remote and inaccessible
  • 2. Characters may become character types, sometimes quaint or stereotypical.
  • 3. The narrator is typically an educated observer from the world beyond
  • 4. Stories may revolve around the community and its rituals.
  • 5. An antipathy to change and a nostalgia for an always-past golden age

Before you get started reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,, you should read "The Autobiography of Mark Twain": A short story about an incident from Mark Twain's childhood. This autobiographical account can be found on p. 658 in your literature book. Read the story and answer questions 1-5 on page 667. You might also want to read the Part 2 Introduction: Tricksters and Trailblazers on p. 632 to get an idea of what was happening in the United States during the 1800's.

Huckleberry Finn : Mark Twain's classic novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the most well-known stories in American Literature.

Local Color Project : This is a fun activity to wrap up the unit. Once again, it's time to BE CREATIVE.
