Persuasion Project

Your first step in this project is to choose a big-name company (Ford, Chevy, M&M/Mars, Nike, Sony etc.) After deciding which company you're going to focus on you need to find 5-10 advertisements published or broadcast by that company. Clip them out of printed material and record a commercial off the television (if possible)in order to put together a presentation. The print ads and the commercial will be used as your visual aid.

When you have gathered this material for your presentation, you will write a two page paper that discusses the advertisements in terms of the persuasive techniques and appeals discussed in this unit. The paper should convince the reader of the validity of the ad campaign and discuss the company's success. In other words, you want to convice your reader that the company is doing a good job or maybe the company is "worthless." The paper must have an introduction and conclusion and include the following:

* a description of the company itself (do some research)

* the types of persuasive techniques used in the ads

* the persuasive appeals used

* target audience

* the success of the ad campaign

In this worksheet you will be meeting Kansas Assessment Indicator #'s 1.4.8 Compares and contrasts varying aspects (ex: characters' traits and motives, themes, problem-solution, cause-effect relationships, ideas and concepts, procedures, viewpoints, author's purpose, persuasive techniques, use of literary devices, thoroughness of supporting evidence) in one or more appropriate level texts.

1.4.9 Explains and analyzes cause-effect relationships in appropriate- level narrative, expository, technical, and persuasive texts.

1.4.10 Uses paraphrasing and organizational skills to summarize information (stated and implied main ideas, main events, important details, underlying meaning) from appropriate-level narrative, expository, technical, and persuasive texts in logical or sequential order, clearly preserving the author's intent.

When you've finished your paper you should hand it in with your visual aid to Mrs. Meek
