Guide to Creation Myths

Guide to Analyzing Creation Myths: By Joan Andersen

 

Complete the following for each creation myth. Use complete sentences. (You should fill out this guide when reading The World on the Turtle's Back, and when you create your own myth.)

 

1. State the Title.

 

 

2. State the place and people of origin.

 

 

3. Explain the environmental context, i.e., climate, geography, weather, etc.

 

 

4. Describe what existed before the creation of the present world.

 

 

5. Describe the creation of the present world.

 

 

 

6. Explain who or what did the creating.

 

 

7. Describe the materials it, they, he, she used.

 

 

8. Describe how and with what materials mankind was created.

 

 

9. Explain what this creation myth suggests about this culture.

 

 

 

 

10. Explain two aspects of the myth which suggests the underlying astronomic, scientific, medical, or mathematical ideas.

 

 

11. Identify two aspects of the myth/culture that you would like to know more about.

 

 

12. Look up the Native American culture in your book and on the internet and write five interesting facts about that culture.
