Puritan Literature and The Crucible

As an introduction to the play The Crucible, read "Of Plymouth Plantation" by William Bradford (p. 81), and "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards (p. 152). Both stories can be found in The Language of Literature (McDougal Littel) and they will help you understand better what life was like for the Puritan settlers here in the New World, where they came to escape religious persecution in Europe. Interestingly enough, before and during the Salem Witch Trials they subjected so many others to their own forms of persecution.

The Crucible describes the events and characters surrounding the Salem Witch Trials of the 1600's. "The Examination of Sarah Good" on p. 144 is an actual transcript from the trials and will help you see what took place at the trial of an accused witch.

Study Guide: The Crucible (page 163) : Use the study guide as you read The Crucible It will be helpful in remembering what you've read, and to study for the test at the end of the unit.

Crucible Vocabulary : These are 50 words found in The Crucible. or are words used in describing the events surrounding the Salem Witch Trials. They will be on the test.

Journal Assignments: The Crucible : The four journal entries will help you relate The Crucible to your own life and the situations you go through on a day to day basis compared to those of the characters in the novel.

The Crucible Dialogue Project and The Crucible Newspaper Assignment : These assignments will help you get better acquainted with the Salem Witch Trials and the attitudes of the people at that time. Have fun with these projects and BE CREATIVE!!.
