Second Semester
2nd Semester: Study the following units, in this order, and complete each unit by completing the study guides and writing assignments, and by taking the quizzes and tests that correspond to the unit of study.
- The Dark Romantics:
To begin the second semester of work the student will read the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Washington Irving.
- Slavery and the Civil War: Both non-fiction and fiction selections are used to study the effects of slavery and the Civil War on the United States.
- Local Color: This unit centers around the novel Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, along with a few short stories and some poetry.
- The Research Paper: In this unit students will spend time researching, brainstorming, outlining, drafting, editing and rewriting a major research paper of 8-10 pages in length about an American author, time period, or selection of literature.
- Modernism: The literature of the first half of the 20th century is the focus of this unit. You'll study the likes of Hemingway, Cather, Fitzgerald, and others.
- Linking Mathematics to American Literature 2: Once again, students will use their math skills to learn more about American Literature.
