There are selections from five authors required in this unit. These selections are found in The Language of Literature (MacDougal/Littel). Read the poems and narratives and answer the questions at the end of the story in order to prepare for the test at the end of the unit. The study guide/test review will help you narrow down the subject matter for the test.

1. A Psalm of Life by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (page 344)

2. from Self-Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson (page 363)

3. from Walden by Henry David Thoreau (page 381)

4. from Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau (page 369)

5. Selected Poems: I Hear America Singing, I Sit and Look Out, and Song of Myself by Walt Whitman (page 396-405)

Individualism Journals: These journals will give you insight into your own individuality as well as those writers in this unit.
